Launch Spot Guides

Our growing guide to Austin's best paddle boarding launch spots. Parking tips, wind notes, and best‑time‑to‑go for each location.

Popular Beginner Friendly

Auditorium Shores

Lady Bird Lake · Downtown Austin

The most popular launch spot on Lady Bird Lake, and for good reason. Easy access from the parking lot, a gentle shoreline for launching, and jaw-dropping skyline views once you're on the water. This is where most of our sunset cruises start.

Parking

Free lot — fills up on weekends. Street parking available nearby.

Difficulty

Easy. Calm water, wide open area to get comfortable.

Best Time

Weekday evenings for sunset. Weekend mornings before 9 AM to beat crowds.

Wind

Can get gusty in the afternoon. Mornings are usually calmer.

Chill Beginner Friendly

Festival Beach

Lady Bird Lake · East Austin

A mellower alternative to Auditorium Shores. Less crowded, especially on weekday mornings. Great for sunrise laps — the light on the water here is incredible. Sandy-ish entry makes it easy on bare feet.

Parking

Small lot on Jesse E. Segovia St. Fills fast on weekends.

Difficulty

Easy. Protected from most wind. Gentle current.

Best Time

Sunrise to mid-morning. Magic hour lighting for photos.

Wind

Somewhat sheltered by trees. Less exposed than Auditorium Shores.

Scenic Dog Friendly

Red Bud Isle

Lake Austin · West Austin

A nature lover's launch spot. Paddle around the island for a scenic loop through shaded, tree-lined water. Very popular with dog owners — expect friendly pups swimming alongside you. The water here is clearer than Lady Bird Lake.

Parking

Small lot at the end of Red Bud Trail. Gets packed — arrive early.

Difficulty

Easy-Moderate. Watch for boat wake from Lake Austin.

Best Time

Early mornings for calm water. Weekday evenings to avoid crowds.

Wind

Sheltered near the island. Open sections can be choppy on windy days.

Hidden Gem

Lou Neff Point

Lady Bird Lake · Zilker Area

A lesser-known launch point near Barton Springs. Slightly tricky access down a grassy slope, but once you're on the water you're rewarded with a quieter stretch of the lake. Great paddle east toward the Congress Ave bridge.

Parking

Use Zilker Park lots. Short walk to the point.

Difficulty

Easy. Calm, wide section of the lake.

Best Time

Any time — it's rarely crowded. Sunset is phenomenal here.

Wind

Somewhat exposed. Check conditions on gusty days.

Easy Access Beginner Friendly

Waller Beach

Lady Bird Lake · East Side

A convenient east-side launch with a proper beach entry. Close to I-35 but feels surprisingly natural once you're on the water. Paddle west for skyline views or east for a quieter stretch toward Pleasant Valley.

Parking

Lot on Lakeshore Blvd. Metered on weekends.

Difficulty

Easy. Sandy entry, calm water.

Best Time

Mornings before 10 AM. Gets busy on warm weekends.

Wind

Open stretch — check forecast. Usually manageable.

Pro Tips

General Launch Tips

Check the Wind

Anything under 10 mph is ideal. Over 15 mph and it gets tough, especially for beginners. We like the Windy app for forecasts.

Arrive Early on Weekends

Parking fills fast at popular spots. Get there 20-30 minutes before you want to launch, especially in summer.

Respect the Lake

Stay out of restricted areas, yield to kayakers and boats, and never litter. Leave the water better than you found it.

Wear Your PFD

It's required by law on Lady Bird Lake and just smart everywhere else. Belt-style PFDs are comfortable and low-profile.

Bring More Water Than You Think

Austin heat sneaks up on you on the water. At least 32 oz for a short paddle, more for longer trips.

Use a Leash

A coiled ankle leash keeps your board close if you fall in. Especially important in areas with current or boat traffic.
